Certification for fair trade and responsible supply chains |
Impact, special achievements & commitments | Bloom Agro is a social enterprise working with 600 small- scale farmers to increase their livelihoods. They were the pioneer to first achieve international organic and fair trade certification in Indonesia in 2009. Their main aim is to increase the prosperity of farmers, who have been trapped in decades of poverty cycle. The agricultural market is dominated by loan shark traders, who give advance loans, and low prices for harvest, so farmers end up worse than before. They were the first to link rice buyers to the international market place, by breaking down the link, and successfully lobbying the government to reverse export ban for products such as rice. Their product portfolio includes rice, arenga sugar, cashew, spices, and vegetables and fruits. With one of their producer group Simpatik, they were able to help many farmers send their children to university or a tertiary education, which is unusual in Indonesia. Their fair trade fund has also contributed to help with natural disasters and building of public facilities, especially toilets which are lacking in villages. | |||||||
