| Impact, special achievements & commitments | | | The Growers Group in Kenya is located at the foothills of Mount Kenya, on the equator, some 200 km from Nairobi and along the great northern corridor to Ethiopia and Somalia. The major vegetation is dry grassland, located on the leeward side of Mt. Kenya with annual rainfall not sufficient for intensive farming activities. This is resultant in a predominance of small scale livestock farming (semi-grazing), subsistence crops, together with the cultivation of sugar peas, cabbage and potatoes as commercial cash crops. The farm size structure and tenure is dominated by 1-10 acre plots under single family ownership. The Producers are organized under the Kenya Organic Oil Farmers Association ( KOOFA ) which is divided into eight different regions.
Nanyuki Oils Ltd employs a total of 29 permanent workers and several casual workers depending on work demand.
Fair Trade Projects: Both workers and Producers are beneficiaries of the Fair Trade Premium. This has so far been used in a variety of projects: • Water tanks • Scholarships • School equipment • Solar Panels • Cooking Stoves • Food for schools and orphanages • Etc
A detailed Fair Trade Premium report will be shared with Fair Trade Partners. |
